The main culprit for pets becoming overweight is the fact that the vast majority of pets are fed kibble. Kibble is high in starch, carbohydrates and sugar. Most kibble is actually higher in carbs than protein. Like humans, when we eat fast food and junk food, we gain weight. The exact thing happens to pets. Kibble is comparable to eating fast food. 

Even if a commercial pet food claims it "meets nutritional requirements", it is designed to be a convenience food that lasts longer than fresh food. Think about processed food for humans: we know they are not the healthiest choice for us, yet we tend to buy it because it's quick, easy and lasts longer on our shelves. Same goes for processed pet foods. Kibble tends to be full of preservatives and grain additives, which compromise about 50% of processed pet foods

There are a few causes of diabetes which include:

• Breed predisposition 
• Being inactive
• Lack of Omega 3 oils
• Chronic inflammation stemming from diseases such as IBD, pancreatitis, or skin allergies
• Use of medications such as steroids long term
• Diets high in carbohydrates

Most of the reasons above can be linked to a kibble fed diet....we know that kibble is more high in carbohydrates compared to a raw diet. Diabetes is characterized by having too much sugar in the bloodstream. Carbohydrates create sugar (glucose.) Dogs are more than capable of producing all the glucose that their body needs without any dietary carbs whatsoever.
